Words of Sewing Wisdom

I'm trying to foster a loving relationship between me and my sewing maching. We don't always have one. I'm trying to rekindle the flame, but I find it enticing to buy already made items at the thrift stores, to adorn and embellish. I am talking myself into having an afternoon chat with Mr. Brother (sewing machine brand...)and see if we can hang out.

I really want to make some bags, it was good timing that my mom sent me this exerpt from Singer. I'm sure the last time my mother sewed was in 4th grade Home Ec Class. The time she baste stitched my Homecoming Dance dress in '93 (that fell completely apart during the night) doesn't count. I went to that dance withCorey, my husband. My inherited sewing genius (or lack thereof) must have impressed him.

So maybe I'll follow these words of wisdom to help this sew thing along:

“Words of Sewing Wisdom from Singer
Sewing Advice from a 1949 Singer Sewing Manual! How to prepare yourself to sew!

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing.

Think about what you are going to do.

Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically.

Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade.

When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.
Put on a clean dress.
When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible.
Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals.

Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on. If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.

I'll let you know how things go!

  1. Girl, I *live* by this manual!

Depending on what I'm planning to do, I replace the word "sewing" with, let's say "drumming!" Wearing a dress, having my hair in order and some wild rose lipstick does wonders for keeping the beat. And it's true, who can drum when they have a sink full of dishes or have other undone chores...*distracting* I tell you!
And heck, I highly recommend having a bag of French (and *only* French!) chalk near by...no matter what it is that you're doing. That stuff is handy!

Well, good luck...do let us know how it goes! No doubt we'll need photo documentation!

(and no, my quote button is not broken, I'm emphasizing!) :-D

  4. See this is my issue...I sew in my pajamas and don't present a martini to my husband in my freshly sewn and pressed apron when he gets home. I knew I was doing something wrong! Lipstick now going in my accessory box on the sewing machine, because that is actually sound advice. Moist lip never get tired of sewing and talking and drinking coffee...
